Antony Matthews - Organist

Biography

Antony was born in South-East London into a very musical family. He began his musical training very early in life - soon after he was spotted imitating his father simultaneously conducting a choir and playing the organ - with piano lessons from a friend of the family. He started having piano lessons with Gary Preston at The John Fisher School in Purley, and aged 13, had his first organ lesson with the school's organ teacher, Rosemary Nayyar.

Antony soon began to play at the family's local parish, St John the Evangelist in Tadworth, where his Father is the Organist and Choirmaster. He moved on to study the organ with Nigel McClintock, then Director of Music at Croydon Parish Church. Antony was also a member of his school's choirs, for whom he occasionally played the organ and piano, and toured places such as Rome, South Poland and Ireland.

Antony started studying for his Music Degree at the Univeristy of Exeter in 2003, where he was the Junior Organ Scholar in the University Chapel for a year, and studied the organ with Paul Morgan (then Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral). As a member of the University's Chapel Choir he performed at a number a Cathedrals in South-West England, including Salisbury, Winchester and Exeter. His Second Year Performance recital was on the organ in Exeter Cathedral.

At the end of his second year, owing to the iminent closure of Exeter's Music Department, he had to transfer to the University of Bristol to complete his last year, where he studied with Dr David Ponsford. His Final Year Recital was on the organ of St Mary Redcliffe Church in Bristol.

Since returning to London, Antony worked for a year as the Organ Scholar at St Mary's Church in Battersea, before becoming the Director of Music at St Joseph's Catholic Church in New Malden. He currently studies with the renowned international organist Robert Munns.
