Antony Matthews - Organist

Biography

Antony was born in Peckham, South East London, to a very musical family. He was spotted imitating his father simultaneously conducting a choir and playing the organ and a very early age, and soon began piano lessons with a family friend at the age of 5.

Two years after starting at The John Fisher School, Purley, he began having organ lessons with the school's organ teacher, Rosemary Nayyar, and quickly unseated his father as the organist in the family's parish church, St John the Evangelist, Tadworth. His father has since been 're-seated' as the organist!. He soon moved on to having organ lessons with Nigel McClintock, then Director of Music at Croydon Parish Church.

Antony began studying for his Music degree at the University of Exeter in 2003, where he studied organ with Paul Morgan (Exeter Cathedral), and was the Junior Organ Scholar at the University Chapel for a year. As a member of the University Chapel Choir he toured a number of Cathedrals in South West England, including Salisbury, Winchester and Exeter. At the end of his second year, owing to the imminent closure of the university's Music Department, he transferred to complete his degree at the Univeristy of Bristol, where he studied with Paul Morgan.

Following his graduation in 2006 he worked for a year as the Organ Scholar in St Mary's Parish Church, Battersea, before taking up the newly created position of Director of Music at St Joseph's Catholic Church, New Malden. In January 2012 he took the position of Organist and Choirmaster at All Saints' Parish Church, Carshalton, combining this with the position of Organist to the Polychoir at St Bartholomew's Catholic Church, Norbury. He is also the accompanist to Sutton Chorale.

Antony is currently studying for his LRSM with the renowned international concert organist Robert Munns; he has what he would term a 'proper job' at Morgensterns Diary Service in Croydon.
